Earth Day 2010: The Update is a multi-faceted event with something for everyone. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Earth Day Challenge Cup - when you register to volunteer you can declare your allegiance to your favorite non-profit, school (K-12), or business and put them in the running to win!
  • Tree Initiative – The average American uses the equivalent of one 100-foot tall, 16-inch diameter tree every year for their paper and wood product needs. Plant a tree now to make up for your use this year; or, plant one in honor or memory of your favorite person (or pet, or pet rock).
  • Community Garden Initiative Grow veggies. Grow a community. (Strawberries and basil OK too!)  Start, renew or expand your garden by participating in this initiative.
  • Clean Out Your Basement Day -- It's time for spring cleaning! Hosted by Greenovate, this project will allow you to unload all your "surplus" stuff - everything from old TVs to yard waste - in one handy location in the Short North on April 17 between 10am and 4pm. (Located in the parking lot at the corner of North High and East Second Ave in the Short North.)
  • Faith-based Initiative Engaging people of all faiths in environmental stewardship.
  • People's History of Earth Day - Share your story or view those submitted by others!
  • Upcycled Fashion Show – You’ve seen purses out of juice packs and wallets from old tires. But what about this prize-winning dress from an old curtain and pillow case? Designers and models: get info on participating by emailing upcycledfashion@update2010.org. Audience members: pack up that lawn furniture made from pallets and meet us at Franklin Park on Thursday, April 22.
  • Video and Photo Contest – Don't let these moments become lost in time! Shoot at Saturday and/or Sunday worksites, edit Monday and Tuesday, and submit on time for bragging rights and more.
